  • Algeria’s Gold Production Set to Surge with New Mining Projects

    Tue Dec 31 2024

Algeria’s gold production is poised for a significant increase in the coming years, driven by the reopening of the Amesmassa and Tirek gold mines in the Tamanrasset province, after being dormant for over a decade.

Belkacem Soltani, CEO of the state-owned mining group Sonarem, announced that this surge in gold output is expected to contribute substantially to the country’s mining sector.

Soltani revealed that in 2024, around 46 licenses were granted to companies seeking to exploit gold deposits across the country. This aligns with the rising momentum of Algeria’s gold industry, with national production already surpassing 351 kilograms between 2022 and December 2024.

These advancements come as part of Algeria’s broader strategy to boost the mining sector’s role in diversifying the national economy.

In addition to gold, major mining projects, including the Gara Djebilet iron mine in Tindouf, the integrated phosphate mine of Bled El Hadba in Tébessa, and the Tala Hamza-Oued Amizour zinc and lead mine in Béjaïa, are progressing rapidly.

Soltani emphasized that these projects are on track to meet their deadlines, supported by necessary material and human resources. These strategic initiatives are expected to have a significant impact on Algeria’s economy, aligning with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s calls for their swift implementation.
