Why Kyrgyzstan is Increasing Gold Reserves and Whether It’s Worth Buying Gold

Wed Aug 19 2026

Kyrgyzstan has been actively increasing its international reserves in recent years, which for the first time in history have exceeded 10 billion dollars, setting a new record for the country. The main question is why central banks continue to increase their investments in gold and how interesting this asset is for private investors.

Gold has strategic significance for Kyrgyzstan, which is one of the leading producers of this metal in Central Asia. The Kumtor deposit, in particular, is considered one of the largest gold mines in the region.

This precious metal is traditionally viewed as a reliable protective asset, which explains the active increase of its share in the international reserves by central banks. A study by the World Gold Council shows that over the past four years, central banks have been acquiring an average of about 1,000 tons of gold annually, which is nearly double the average level of the previous decade.

According to a survey, 89% of central banks expect global gold reserves to grow in the next 12 months, and 45% plan to increase their holdings, which is a record figure. However, interest in gold is not only shown by state structures—changes in global metal prices create opportunities for private investors as well.

For example, if an investor had bought gold at the beginning of July 2026 at a price of about $3,980 per troy ounce and closed the deal at the beginning of August at $4,230, their return would have been about 6.3%. With an investment of $1,000, the profit could have reached $63, and using a multiplier of x5, the potential profit would be $315.

Gold Prospects

The price of gold depends on many factors, including central bank decisions on interest rates, inflation expectations, geopolitical situations, and actions by regulators in the precious metals market. For Kyrgyzstan, it is also important that gold is one of the key export goods, and the value of international reserves is largely determined by changes in global prices for this metal.

With sustained demand from central banks and high global economic uncertainty, interest in gold may continue to grow. This creates opportunities for both long-term capital preservation and quick profit from fluctuations in market quotes.
