    Mon July 01 2024

The Council of the European Union banned the imports of gold, diamonds, helium and mineral resources from Belarus on Saturday. "Regarding imports, it will be prohibited to import directly or indirectly, purchase or transfer namely of gold and diamonds from Belarus, as well as helium, coal and mineral products including crude oil," the council said in a statement.

The date of the ban's entry into force has not been specified. "The latter measure will be complemented by a new export ban on goods and technologies suitable for use in oil refining and the liquefaction of natural gas," the council said. The new restrictions seek to prevent Russia from circumventing the EU sanctions and "stemmed from the high degree of integration existing between the Russian and Belarusian economies," it said.

"These comprehensive measures aim at mirroring several of the restrictive measures already in place against Russia," the council said.
