  • Kavango finds deeper gold mineralisation beyond surface workings at Zimbabwe prospect

    Mon Aug 19 2024

London-listed Kavango Resources has received 582 assay results for soil samples collected over 1.5 km2 on the Prospect 4 area of the Hillside project, in Zimbabwe. The soil sampling area is underlain by greenstones and granites, offset by a regional shear with multiple quartz-vein complexes producing gold from artisanal surface workings.

The soil samples were assayed for gold using a bottle roll cyanide leach technique at Performance Laboratories, in Zimbabwe, in conjunction with handheld portable X-ray fluorescence readings for other elements carried out by the company. Kavango confirms that the anomalous gold values appear to be closely associated with the east-to-west-trending shears favoured by the artisanal and historical miners, as well as the south-southwest- and north-northeast-trending structures interpreted from geophysics.

The assay results confirm a larger mineralised system currently being worked only locally by artisanal miners. They also indicate the possible presence of additional gold-bearing structures that have not been tested, the company says. Among the best assay results for the soil sampling programme were 2.5 m of gold grading 29 g/t from 97 m, including a peak grade of 212 g/t over 0.34 m, and 1.3 m of gold grading 1.8 g/t from 214 m.

Kavango will soon mobilise a drill rig on Prospect 4 after completing current drilling on Prospect 3. “As more results come from Hillside, Kavango’s exploration is increasingly focused on defining potential resources for mining. We are enthusiastic about the chances of near-term mining at Prospect 4. The soil sample assays confirm the wider potential for a minable gold orebody around this target,” says CE Ben Turney.

The company will follow up some targets with an induced polarisation survey to see if more concealed shear zones are present – this should further increase confidence for drilling in the area.
