  • First turbine up at 24-MW wind farm for Aussie gold mine

    Thu July 04 2024

The first Goldwind turbine has been installed at a 24-MW wind farm that will be powering a gold mine in Western Australia, along with solar and gas-fired generation.

The GW165/6.0MW machine is the first of four turbines that will create the Jundee wind farm, Chinese manufacturer Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology said in a LinkedIn post. The project is owned by Aussie independent power producer Zenith Energy Pty Ltd.

The wind farm will form part of a larger complex consisting of photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery storage integrated into an existing gas power station. Their operation is expected to cut more than 50% of the greenhouse gas emissions at the Jundee gold mine in Western Australia’s Northern Goldfields region.

Zenith Energy has been providing 46.6 MW of power generation to the Jundee mine through natural gas-fuelled generators since 2016. The company last summer signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Northern Star Resources, the mine’s operator, to supply the site with green power from 24 MW of wind, 16.9 MWp of solar and a 12-MW/13.4-MWh battery energy storage system. The solar plant at the site was commissioned at the end of May.
