Ghana Positions Itself As A Global Leader In Ethical Gold Sourcing – Lands Minister
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to legal, ethical, and environmentally responsible gold mining practices, highlighting the government’s bold efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in the sector.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 23, the Minister emphasized that transparent gold sourcing is central to Ghana’s strategy for responsible resource management.
“Transparent sourcing of gold is critical. GoldBod is a game-changer in making sure that all gold exported from Ghana can be traced back to legitimate sources. We are building trust in the global marketplace,” he said.
According to the Minister, GoldBod, a digital platform launched by the government a few months ago, is now operational and serves as Ghana’s official system for verifying and certifying gold production nationwide. It is designed to track gold from its origin, ensuring it comes from legal and vetted mining operations.
He explained that the government’s new focus on cooperative and community-based mining, coupled with support for on-site refining, will significantly strengthen compliance with international standards and improve the credibility of Ghana’s gold exports.
Through GoldBod, certified gold producers, particularly those operating within legal cooperatives, are integrated into a traceable value chain, further aligning Ghana’s gold sector with global sustainability benchmarks.
Hon. Buah added that Ghana’s direction is already attracting international attention and confidence. “Leading global players in the gold value chain now see Ghana as serious about sustainable and responsible mining. This opens doors for investment, technical support, and stronger export markets.”
“When our gold is certified and traceable, it earns a better place on the world stage. This isn’t just about mining, it’s about positioning Ghana as a responsible resource nation,” he added.
